Book Review: Unorthodox Openings

Unorthodox Openings. Benjamin & Schiller. Batsford. 1987.

This is not to be confused with the very similarly named Unorthodox Chess Openings by Schiller alone, which so earned the contempt of the late Tony Miles that his entire review of the book in the English chess magazine Kingpin consisted of two words: Utter crap. Well, I don't know about that, but I found this book, while hardly a classic of chess literature, still worth a read. It contains lots of interesting ideas of varying merit. None are explored very thoroughly; but nevertheless if you're one of those players who likes to explore off-beat ideas in the opening, this might be for you. "Explore" is the operative word, though: you'll be doing most of the analysis yourself. Not that there's anything wrong with that!
