Book review: The Immortal Games of Capablanca

The Immortal Games of Capablanca. Fred Reinfeld. Dover. 1990. English Descriptive notation. 238pp. ISBN 0486263339. Unabridged and unaltered republication of the work first published by Horowitz and Harkness, New York, in 1942.

Surely the first book to appear about the great Cuban player, this has all the signs of being a pot-boiler produced rapidly to cash in on the Grandmaster's utimely death in March 1942. However, it is a good book nonetheless, There is a decent biographical essay, a tournament and match record, and 112 games competently annotated by Reinfeld with some help from contemporary annotations. The games include many I had never seen before as well as some old chestnuts. In summary: recommended.
