The Pan Book of Chess. Gerald Abrahams. Pan. 1965. 288 pp. Descriptive notation.
I strongly suspect that this was the first chess book I ever read. I was nine or ten, and it was way over my head. It is a good introductory text, though its purport is somewhat undermined by Abrahams' idiosyncractic belief that chess is fundamentally unteachable! As a textbook for beginners, it doesn't begin to compare with Dr. Tarrasch's das Schachspiel — but then, few do. It would certainly be very good as a second chess book.
