Book review: Alekhine’s Best Games of Chess 1938—1945

Alekhine’s Best Games of Chess 1938—1945. C. H. O’D. Alexander. London. G. Bell and Sons, Ltd. 1959. First published 1949. Reprinted 1959. Selected and annotated by C. H. O’D. Alexander

This volume is the third of a trilogy; the first volume (1908—1923) showed Alekhine's rise to a position in the chess word second only that of Capablanca — the second (1924—1937) covered the period when his powers reached their greatest height, the victory over Capablanca in 1927 and his overwhelming triumphs at San Remo (1930), Bled (1931) and Berne (1932). This volume (1938—1945) deals with his final years; although his play in this period has not quite the same sureness as it had ten years earlier, it retains the unmistakable stamp of his genius.
