Book Review: The Batsford Guide to Chess Openings

The Batsford Guide to Chess Openings. Leonard Barden and Tim Harding. Batsford. 1976. Descriptive notation.

The title is rather misleading, since this is less a guide than a repertoire book: both White and Black are offered two repertoires, one for the "combinative" player, the other for the "positional" player. On the other hand, I suppose one could interpret "guide" as someone who leads the reader on a safe path through the thicket of opening variations. Also, there are annoying references to this line and that line being covered— in another book! That said, the book is a useful, albeit dated, survey of some lines from a wide variety of openings.
