Book review: Bobby Fischer’s Games of Chess

Bobby Fischer’s Games of Chess. Bobby Fischer. London. Museum Press Limited. 1959. With a Foreword by H. Golombek. 97pp. English Descriptive notation.

The book begins with a brief foreword from Harry Golombek, a noted British master. Then comes Fischer himself. My Chess Career, May 1955 — May 1958, is written in the style of a school essay (hey, he was fifteen!).

The bulk of the book is made up of all of his games from the U.S. Championship 1957/58, annotated. There follows a brief intermission with "The Game of the Century" (Byrne-Fischer 1956), also annotated.

Finally, by way of an afterword, all of Fischer's games from the 1958 Interzonal Tournament at Potoroz in Yugoslavia, without annotations. There are 20 of these, (the tourney had 21 rounds but an an odd number of participants; Fischer had a bye in round 5). Of these, Fischer-Larsen and Petrosyan-Fischer also appear in My Sixty memorable Games, where they are of course copiously annotated.

Previously very rare, the book has in recent years been made available as a "print on demand" paperback by Ishi Press.
