Book Review: Speed Chess Challenge: Kasparov v. Short 1987

Speed Chess Challenge: Kasparov v. Short 1987. Keene. Batsford / Channel Four. 1987.

One of many hapless attempts to make chess "mainstream" in the '70s and '80s in Brtain, the "Speed Chess Challenge" was a six-game match between Garri Kasparov and Nigel Short played at the London Hippodrome, Leicester Square, on 4th and 5th February, 1987. The time control was 25 minutes per player per game. The final result was Kasparov 4, Short 2, no draws.

The book assumes a basic knowledge of the game, but not necessarily any previous experience with chess books, so we are treated to a brief explanation of chess notation. A diagram is provided after each move of each game, so being "au fait" with chess notation is not necessary to follow the games themselves, only to keep up with the variations in the notes.
