Book review: The Best Chess Games of Boris Spassky

The Best Chess Games of Boris Spassky. Andy Soltis. Pitman Publishing. 1973. English Descriptive Notation. h/b. ISBN 0 273 00361 5.

Spassky is not particularly well-served by books either by or about him. He has written very little himself, and has not attracted nearly as much literary attention as his successor to the chess world championship title. This is a pity, as he was one of the finest chess players of all time, and played some marvellous games.

This is one of Soltis's better books (well, I say that; but I've never read a bad one of his!). It covers Spassky's career from 1949 up to 1971, thus excluding the fateful match of 1972.

There are 70 games.

The notes are hardly painstaking, but they are serviceable. Also, Soltis is that rara avis among chess writers, one with a recognisable and enjoyable prose style, so the book is a pleasure to read.

Out of print; worth picking up if you can find a copy.
