Book Review: Chess for Tigers

Chess for Tigers. Simon Webb. Oxford University Press. 1978.

The German translation is amusingly mis-categorised under "Juniorschach" (chess for children, basically). This book is anything but, though a promising junior might profit from it as well as any other chess player. The essential task the author undertakes is to advise the reader on how to make the most of what he already has: this isn't a chess improvement book, but a chess results improvement book. Webb states his case in the first chapter: You could be a much better chess-player than you are. How? Simply by making fuller use of your natural ability. The chapter headings set the tone:
