About me and my life in engineering.
I'm Felipe Alfonso González, a Computer Science Engineer (Ingº en Informática) from Santiago, Chile. Since the 1990s I have also embraced my Jewish roots, a quiet influence in my family history. My relationship with technology began in the mid-80s — when connecting meant a phone cable and compiling the kernel on UNIX or GNU/Linux to reach AltaVista. Since then I have kept learning and building: I cherish FreeBSD, Debian and Arch Linux, while appreciating macOS for its BSD roots.
Professionally my work weaves Systems Architecture, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Cyber Intelligence, Cyber Counter-Terrorism, and Complex Engineering with a sustained focus on R&D (I+D). I am preparing a forthcoming Master’s degree in Big Data & Business Intelligence. Over more than twenty-three years I’ve designed systems, led engineering teams up to Head of Engineering, collaborated with Leo Prieto, researched advanced algorithms, consulted for organisations and moved between roles in Europe, the USA and South America. My technical interests include data structures, algorithms, databases, statistical modelling, machine learning, stochastic dynamic programming, functional and object-oriented paradigms, refactoring and decomposition, and the practical art of problem-solving.
I teach and advise — formally and online — as a lecturer and advisor, contribute to open-source projects and participate in the GitHub community (I’m part of maintainers’ teams). I code constantly, keep studying, and value rigorous collaboration. If you prefer secure communication there is my PGP Public Key, and if you want to inspect my work you can find me on GitHub and the linked profiles below.
Life beyond code sits beside my professional curiosity: I have lived in New Delhi, Auckland, Christchurch, California and Cape Town, experiences that broadened my language palette (Spanish, English, Afrikaans) and my view of cultures and systems. Family and tradition matter: I come from a household where service and civic life were constant — my father, Alfonso González Márquez, and my uncle, Carlos González Márquez (both departed), shaped early values of duty and ethics; my cousin Santiago González Larraín has also been active in public life in Freemasonry, and our family connection to the Grand Lodge of Chile is part of a long continuity. I thoroughly enjoy writing and reading -check out my Goodreads Bookshelves-; I'm always seeking enlightenment and knowledge — I seek truth in the silence of my steps; this is why I enjoy studying philosophy, consciousness, and even exploring the knowledge found in Freemasonry in all its forms. I also served as a Rover Scout Leader with the Agrupación Nacional de Boy Scouts de Chile.
My private and creative habits sustain the work: I practice Zazen (see also Zazen en español) as a contemplative discipline, teach occasional talks on InsightTimer, and define myself as a secular atheist who embraces mindfulness and ethical inquiry. I love animals and nature and support the ethical treatment of animals through PETA. I read widely (my Goodreads shelves), play bass guitar — an Ibanez GSRM20B miKro (jazz/blues) — practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and listen to music on my Spotify profile.
I believe in transparency, authenticity, and integrity, as personal and professional principles. Acting with coherence and respect for the impact of one’s actions guides my work. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, consulting, research, or simply exchanging ideas, I welcome the chance to connect. You can reach me through my LinkedIn, X (Twitter), at gnlz.cl, on Freeshell, by Telegram, or simply by email. And of course, if you ever find yourself in Santiago, I would be delighted to share a thoughtful conversation over a cup of coffee ☕, or, if more convenient, an online chat.
"Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the
seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will
reach your destiny." ~ Carl Schurz
"Truth is lived, not taught." ~ Brother Herman Hesse
"In a cold and ruthless world, all that remains is to thole, persevere and withstand, hold back the tears, and remember that we are nothing more than a whisper in the vastness, an echo that will fade. Nothing of what we possess, nothing of what we believe ourselves to be, will endure… except that which, in the intimacy of ritual and introspection, we forge within ourselves. And not even that. Still, in the deepest darkness, we must learn to rise with an unbreakable will, for only in that acceptance —in that descent to the threshold of the void, where the soul faces its own shadow— can we carve our consciousness into something higher, more worthy… something that transcends."
